Pastor W. F. Kumuyi is the founder and General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church and the Deeper Christian Life Ministry worldwide. He was born into a Christian family in Erin-Ijesha, Nigeria on June 6, 1941. He took an uncommon interest in knowing God intimately at an early age and experienced new life in Christ on April 5, 1964. At that time he devoted himself to serious Bible study and reading testimonies of fathers of faith, including Albert Benjamin Simpson, and the messages and works of great preachers like John Wesley, C. H. Spurgeon and many more. In fact Pastor Kumuyi considers Wesley as his mentor and role model. According to him, much of his holiness and sanctification background derived largely from Wesley's works.
Kumuyi obtained a first class honor degree in mathematics from the University of Ibadan. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Lagos, and eventually joined its faculty staff as a lecturer in 1972. It was here that his God given calling and vocation would be born.
Kumuyi began a Bible study in his campus flat at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Fifteen adults attended the first gathering. Eventually, loud speakers were set up outside his flat for those who gathered each Monday and by December of 1975, 1,500 people were involved in the study. The Deeper Life Bible Church was officially begun on November 7, 1982. The message was simple: “Jesus transforms lives - not only to bring healing but complete Christian character.” By 1988, The Deeper Life Bible Church was recognized as the single largest church in Africa, and the fourth largest in the world.
